A heavily pregnant widow has been banished from Ugbema community in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State after being accused of stealing small items from shops to feed herself and her child.

Eyewitnesses said the woman, who recently lost her husband, was caught on Saturday, October 10, 2025, by local youths and subjected to public punishment under the scorching sun.

Community elders reportedly ordered her expulsion from the area as punishment for her alleged theft.

However, several residents have condemned the action, describing it as inhumane and calling for compassion and support for the distressed widow rather than humiliation.
