The Rivers State Government has commended the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, for its contributions to improving healthcare delivery and promoting medical excellence across the state and Nigeria.
Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, gave the commendation while representing the state government at the 2026 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the association in Port Harcourt.
Wokoma described the NMA as a key partner in strengthening the healthcare system through its consistent advocacy for professionalism, high medical standards and quality healthcare services.
He said the conference theme, "Medical Practice in Nigeria: The Past, the Present and Quo Vadis," provides an opportunity for stakeholders to assess the progress of the health sector, address existing challenges and chart a sustainable path for the future.
The SSG praised Nigerian doctors and other healthcare professionals for their resilience, professionalism and commitment to saving lives despite the numerous challenges facing the sector.
"We appreciate the immense sacrifices made daily by Nigerian doctors and other healthcare professionals. Their dedication and commitment remain critical to national development," he said.
Delivering the keynote address, the immediate past Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Adaeze C. Oreh, urged participants to critically assess the state of medical practice in Nigeria and explore innovative solutions to emerging healthcare challenges.
Earlier, Chairman of the NMA, Rivers State Branch, Dr. (Prof.) Annabel Ureh Oparaodu, thanked Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his continued support for the medical profession in the state and encouraged delegates to take full advantage of the conference for learning and collaboration.
The event featured the commissioning of the NMA Doctors' Lodge and the NMA Water Factory, projects aimed at improving members' welfare and promoting sustainability within the association.
