A patient involved in the assault of a medical doctor at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Mrs. Susanna Adie, has formally apologised to the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), appealing to the union to call off its ongoing strike.
In a letter dated September 2, 2026, and addressed to the President of the Association of Resident Doctors, UUTH, Mrs. Adie expressed deep regret over the incident, which occurred at the hospital's Diabetic Unit on September 1.
She admitted assaulting Dr. Edidiong Ubia while attempting to seek clarification and obtain her medical prescription, describing her action as regrettable and saying it was never intended to be offensive.
Mrs. Adie also withdrew any offensive remarks she made during the altercation, offering an unreserved apology to the doctor, the Association of Resident Doctors and the entire hospital community.
"I sincerely regret my actions and any unpleasantness that may have arisen from the incident," she wrote, adding that she was sorry for the assault and the words spoken during the confrontation.
She appealed to the resident doctors to accept her apology in good faith, stressing that she did not want the unfortunate incident to fuel further tension between her and members of the medical profession.
The apology comes amid industrial action by the Association of Resident Doctors at UUTH following the assault on one of its members. The association is yet to announce whether the apology will influence its decision on the ongoing strike.
