Edo Assembly Gets New Speaker as Agbebaku Resigns

The Edo State House of Assembly has sworn in Hon. Yekini Idaiyi, the member representing Akoko Edo II Constituency, as its new Speaker following the resignation of Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku.

Agbebaku stepped down from office on Monday amid reports of moves by some lawmakers to impeach him, ending his tenure as Speaker and triggering a leadership shake-up in the Assembly.

Shortly after his resignation, the House inaugurated Idaiyi as the new Speaker to lead the legislature.

The Assembly also suspended the former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, alongside the Majority Leader, whose identity was not immediately disclosed.

In a further reorganisation of the House leadership, Hon. Sunny Ojiezele, representing Esan South-East Constituency, was named the new Majority Leader.

Agbebaku's resignation had earlier been confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, in a Facebook post announcing that the Speaker had stepped down from office.

Although no official reason was initially given for the resignation, it followed reports that some lawmakers had begun moves to impeach him.

The latest developments have reshaped the leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly, with the new Speaker expected to steer the affairs of the legislature as it resumes its legislative responsibilities.
