The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks and introduced an online self-service registration platform for first-time voters.
The Commission announced that the registration exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, and was originally scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, will now close on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
According to INEC, the extension followed a review of the exercise and feedback received from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders, with the aim of giving more eligible Nigerians the opportunity to register ahead of future elections.
The electoral body said the extension reflects its commitment to ensuring that every eligible citizen has a fair and reasonable chance to be included in the National Register of Voters.
INEC also announced the introduction of a self-service online registration option for first-time voters, which will become operational on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
The new platform will allow eligible Nigerians to begin and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting any INEC office.
The Commission said the system is equipped with identity verification, biometric validation and other integrity checks to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the voters' register.
INEC urged eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the extension and the new technology-driven registration option, reaffirming its commitment to a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process through the deployment of innovative digital solutions.
