The Rivers State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has strongly condemned the violent attack on Rivers United FC players and management team by fans of Kwara United FC in Ilorin. The incident occurred shortly after Rivers United scored an equalizer to secure a point in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) clash.
In a statement signed by the chapterβs Chairman, Cyril Dum Wite, and Secretary, Com Tonye Orabere, SWAN described the attack as βbarbaric and inhumanβ and called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and NPFL management to bring the perpetrators to book.
βThe barbaric and inhuman behaviour meted on Rivers United players and management team is totally condemnable,β the statement read. βIt is unfortunate that such ugly conduct is being displayed at a time when the NPFL is receiving commendations both within and outside Africa. This trend has brought the league into disrepute and public ridicule. If left unchecked, there may come a time when teams refuse to attend away games.β
SWAN also urged club owners across the country to educate their fans on proper conduct during and after matches. βWe are deeply saddened that footballβa game of peace, unity, and loveβhas become a platform for violence. This is disgraceful and paints a bad image of the Nigerian League,β the statement added.
The body emphasised the need for proactive measures to ensure safety and uphold the integrity of the league, adding that the State Chapter remains committed to promoting sportsmanship and fair play in Nigerian football.
