DSS ARRESTS X USER FOR MILITARY COUP POSTS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man in Oyigbo, Rivers State, for using his personal social media account to call for a military takeover of the Nigerian government.

The suspect, identified as Innocent Chukwuma, allegedly used his “X” handle @TheAgroman to urge the military to “suspend the Nigerian government” and to “dispose of APC.” In a string of posts, Chukwuma wrote that a coup “is needed” in Nigeria and urged citizens to back the armed forces as the only force capable of “resetting” the country.

“A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian Government, and join the AES… It will happen eventually. Nigerians, the military needs your support now! Only them can save this country,” one post read. In another, he accused occupants of Aso Rock of compromising national interest and intelligence, saying only a military intervention could “reset this country.”

A reliable source told this newspaper that DSS operatives traced Chukwuma to Oyigbo and took him into custody. The source said the suspect is cooperating with investigators. There has been no formal public statement from the DSS at the time of filing.

Deji Adesogan, described as a security expert, provided details of the arrest to reporters. Security analysts say public calls for military intervention are treated seriously under Nigerian law because they risk inciting violence and undermining constitutional order.

The arrest comes amid heightened sensitivity in Nigeria to social-media activity that can inflame political tensions. Authorities in the past have monitored and acted against online posts they assess as capable of provoking unrest or encouraging anti-constitutional actions.

Chukwuma’s detention will likely trigger an investigation into whether his posts were isolated expressions or part of a coordinated effort to mobilize support for extra-constitutional change. Legal experts note that, if charged, the suspect could face offences related to sedition, incitement, or other national security laws — charges that carry heavy penalties.
